Winter Diceathlon

Athletes from around the world have gathered to compete in the annual Diceathlon competition. They will take part in five different sports disciplines to determine who is the greatest athlete.

Compete across five different events using pools of dice, removing one as you choose it so the choices diminish for other players. Challenge the Ski Jump, where you are shooting for the highest score, or the Slalom where you want the lowest possible sum. With each event having its own parameters on how to place your dice, you’ll want to really be careful in considering what die to draft and where to use it early on so you can medal higher in each event.

Beast Bulletin 10

A collection of Monster Profiles for Four Against Darkness

We have more beasties for you to collect, and at this point it might just be apt to claim you gotta catch ‘em all. With nearly 20 new monsters to integrate into your binder, or other source of organization, you’re going to have a ton of content at your fingertips to help ensure you never have a dull, repetitive campaign encounter ever again. I know I don’t want to run into a Frostbite Ape, and even the Candlewax Golem promises to be a really tough encounter to make your experience interesting.

Battle Pages: Kingdom of Oolar, Marching Order 4

Masters of glasswork with magical properties.

We’re back with the final week defending the Kingdom of Oolar, and odds are you already know and have deployed the forces of good a few times. But just in case, let’s run down who is in your bench to take the fight to the Ruby Sorceress! The Barbarian is nice, letting you spend a charge to boost their damage which pairs well with the Temple. Merfolk are nice targeting adjacent or diagonal enemies and get extra charges in water. Warhorses are going to do a lot of the work for you, since they can target 2 spaces away. But your MVP will be the Archer, not only because they can attack flying units, but because of Aerial Support, which boosts their damage to flying enemies if you have several Archers next to each other.

Power Creep: Peter, The Docks 2116

Society has fractured, possibly for good. If there is to be recovery it will have to come from those with memories of the past.

Just when I thought we’d seen it all with Threats and their varied abilities, these folks come up with something so strangely original that it blows the mind! The Cleanup Team doesn’t sound menacing until you see their hefty 4 attack value. However, there’s a twist (isn’t there always?) - these guys lose a damage (to a min of 1) for each undefeated Threat in that structure. So you’re probably going to dance around them as much as possible, which opens up a new feeling to your Power Creep map experience…

Dangerous Space: Dint, Repair Mission

Dint’s studies in advanced astrophysics have sadly gone to waste as of late, but as soon as he has enough credits…see ya!

Dint is pretty well-equipped for this one, actually. He has a good range of weaponry to upgrade along two different paths, so regardless of whether you use the Star Fist or the Quickfire 12, you’re in good shape. Not only that, but he can negate the die reduction with his Sword Master skill, making that Star Fist maintain your die value instead of being reduced in a Hole room. His movement values are impressive, too, making the Leaks hurt a little less if you bump that gear up quickly.

GRIMLORE Profane Truths - Case File #35: Randolph Carter, Dreamworld Traveler

It began with a telegram - tense, panicked, unsigned - beckoning Carter to Arkham in the dead of winter. Miskatonic’s campus lay snowbound, yet something stirred beneath the dormitories: a presence not born of flesh, but dream, clawing from the dark between thoughts. A professor vanished, symbols burned into frost-timmed glass, and whispers now ride the wind like broken hymns. Carter, long haunted by the Dreamland’s riddles, must now face a waking terror - an entity that remembers him. Whatever stirs below isn’t merely hungry - it’s calling. And it knows the true name Randolph Carter has long tried to forget.

Here we have yet another phenomenal example of excellent storytelling. While the gameplay obviously shines for the GRIMLORE entries week after week, I always adore the narratives that these entries tell. Not only is the text in here flavorful, but oftentimes there’s synergy between them and the Threats and even the Gear/Artifacts used by the character. If you have just printed them off to play them, but usually skipped the back page full of story, then I strongly recommend delving deep into the mythos on this one and relish the tale being crafted.

Button Shy Game of the Week: Embers

The heroes' meager campfire sputters. Hungry beasts stalk the edges of the light, waiting for their feast. In the nightmarish darkness, the safety of dawn seems impossibly far away.

The newest solo game in a long line of excellent Button Shy solo games, this one has you fending off waves of attacks. Unlike similar concepts, like The Last Lighthouse, this has you using a party of heroes and maneuvering them around to forage for supplies, defending your campfire, and dealing with the threats as they arise. If you love deep and rich solo gaming with minimal components (just the 18 cards!) then you won’t want to miss out on Embers.

Game of the Week: Wildtails: A Pirate Legacy on sale for just $2!

The life of a pirate is never easy and rarely boring. Whether it’s running contraband past military patrols or securing your hideout from rivals, you’ll need equal parts wit and daring to turn your fledgling operation into a pirate empire.

Legacy games are a challenge to design, and in an 18-card footprint I imagine the impossibility factor only increases. Well, you won’t want to miss out on the wonderful artwork and experience provided by Wildtails, a cooperative legacy game for 1-2 players. Complete objectives, manage crises, store resources to the Empire, and defeat a threat with each scenario as you advance through this campaign game that even includes a way to make post-campaign scenarios.
