Pocket Paladin

Epic adventure awaits! Epic in scope. Pocket in size.

That says it all, actually: an epic experience in a small size. This is a very portable game, allowing you to take it nearly anywhere and pull it out to test your luck against a swath of enemies during your adventures. With a handful of rounds to maximize your experience, take down foes and explore the landscape, leveling up and making use of epic new skills. If you want a simple, yet satisfying solo experience with minimal table requirement, then you won’t want to skip over this one!

Rust and Revenue

Forge your railroad empire. Mitigate luck, manipulate your rivals, and end with the most cash.

If you ever wished you could play an 18XX game by yourself, or that there was just a little less time involved in getting it set up, played, and put away, then you are in luck! This solo game distills the essence of the massive 18XX series of games into a thinky experience that is going to keep you coming back time and again as you try to defeat your rivals across several possible difficulties. With plenty of explanations to help you get started, including a great guide on how to walk through a game’s start and opening turns, there’s no need to be intimidated even if you’ve never played an 18XX game before. If you enjoy deep solo experiences, this game is ready to pull into your collection.

The Ferryman: Life Before Death

You arrive at the threshold of a fledgling encampment – Sprocket, and are received by its leader Brom, who offers you shelter within the walls of what may be the last refuge of hope. Though a sanctuary for now, it’ll eventually fall under the iron grip of warlord Eris in the calamitous years to come. Until then, you must safeguard the prospects of this fragile haven.

Run through the gauntlet of two portions of a standard deck of cards, using the numbered cards to gather Supplies in four varieties and use them to overcome various Events that come from the face/ace cards in a separate deck. Each turn is simple: resolve an Event card, or camp to repair, hunt, or search. Managing your balance to complete four missions is going to be essential for success in this one, as if you run out of cards you’re going to lose the game. And if you fail hard enough at some missions or events, you might just die prematurely. If you like simple, yet clever solo gaming you should definitely check this one out.

Beast Bulletin 8

A collection of monster profiles for Four Against Darkness.

Have I expressed enough in the past how much I love these bulletins? They are not only handy for the average 4AD player – granting access to a variety of enemies in one convenient location -but also for any TTRPG player who wants to level up their variety of baddies that could be encountered. Sure, the mechanics might differ, but you can be clever enough to transfer things in a way that makes sense. Why wouldn’t you want to challenge the Orvork, pursue the Glort into perilous depths, or get haunted by the Mist Goblin?

Battle Pages: Kingdom of Oolar, Marching Order 1

Masters of glasswork with magical properties.

This week we see a new kingdom come to the forefront, and this one is going to be a lot of fun. Following the pattern of the past kingdoms, we’ll kick things off by looking at our resident hero: Lochella. She’s pretty cool, targeting any adjacent enemy. However, the really nice thing is that she gains a gem when she attacks an enemy. And if you’ve played Battle Pages before, you already know that gem production can be a really important thing to juggle, which places her as a very solid hero to enter the fray.

Power Creep: Peter, Uptown 2116

Society has fractured, possibly for good. If there is to be recovery it will have to come from those with memories of the past.

Okay, we have a new set of Power Creeps upon us for the next four weeks, and we’ll dive into Peter more next week. This week we actually aren’t focusing much on the Threats, although they are abundant and delightful in their own way. The Creep track has two triggers on the way, the second of which makes you choose a crafting component and cross it out on all structures – that can be painful! However, it is the Evolution trigger which is going to make you cringe, since it drops all threat triggers by 1. This week’s Threat, the Winged Piranna, isn’t special…but they already activate on a 4+ (3+ for the leader) and so you’re going to take a TON of damage once it hits that mark.

Dangerous Space: Dint, Defuse Mission

Dint’s studies in advanced astrophysics have sadly gone to waste as of late, but as soon as he has enough credits…see ya!

Dint has returned to take on the mission of diffusing some bombs throughout The Twinbeam. This won’t be too easy, though, as the Cocky Sentries are here to slow you down – preventing you from marking a checkpoint if you haven’t attacked them yet. The Bolstered Constrictors are also waiting in the wings to make you lose time or good dice, unless you really take them down as early as possible. Can Dint survive the mission? Well, at least he can boost a die being used to Strike a threat…although that probably won’t be needed to change a 1 or a 2 since these foes have a decent defense.

GRIMLORE Profane Truths – Case File #32: Evelyn Thorne, Mythos Historian

Months after surviving the arcane horrors beneath the Witch House, Evelyn Thorne has returned to Miskatonic, her resolve steeled but her dreams fractured. Drawn by a series of cryptic feline disappearances and claw-marked bodies in sleepy Ulthar, Evelyn uncovers an ancient pact long forgotten. The villagers whisper of old gods and feline judges prowling under moonlight. When a black cat delivers her a note written in her own hand, one she never wrote, she knows the veil is thinning again. Whatever stalks Ulthar walks not on two legs… and Evelyn must unearth the truth before the pact breaks entirely.

Evelyn returns with her excellent items such as the Stormcaller Carbine and the Catbone Rattle, ready to take down the Pawnsphinx. It won’t be as easy as it looks, though, as there are a lot of tests to overcome using her skills, and failure is going to make life a whole lot messier for Evelyn. Take down the Whisked Cantors along the way as you navigate through Ulthar and try to put together the clues before it is too late.

Button Shy Game: Mysticana: Oracle’s Sight Expansion

Oracles have powerful visions of potential futures, yet even the most gifted among them – one such as you – still requires assistance to divine the most favorable outcome.

Mysticana meets tarot reading is about the best way to describe this one. You are aiming to find guided mindfulness throughout the process, as you go through the four steps of a reading. If you want a game where you win or lose, this isn’t the one for you, but if you want an experience that helps you to relax and really consider the cards and the potential implications of what you see within the framework of this game experience, then you will definitely want to check this one out!

Game of the Week: Food Truck Champion on sale for just $9!

Food Truck Champion is a game in which each person plays the owner of a new food truck out to make a name for itself. You will hire staff, cook food and please customers to earn awards and popularity. At the end of the day the food truck with the most popularity wins!

This game for 2-5 players has you running a food truck in competition with the other players. With five different role actions to choose from, you are working hard to fill orders properly. The really cool part of this game isn’t just the theme, or the fridge you’ll be storing food inside, but rather the way your space expands as you fulfil orders. This provides incentive to target easier tasks early in order to open yourself up for bigger gains in the future - think of it like prioritizing those bottom row cards in the market in Splendor. You aren’t likely to win with just those cards, but getting a healthy focus on them early can make future cards much easier to obtain. Oh, you get bonuses for sets of awards completed, too. So fire up the burners and get cooking to be the Food Truck Champion!
