Jason Tagmire

It's New Game Friday! David Wiley (Cardboard Clash) is here to tell us about the new games.

Here’s what is new this week:

      • Belona
      • Coats & Hats
      • Morning Coffee Dungeon: Deep Sea Adventure

This week's new games are all available at https://www.pnparcade.com/collections/new-games

      Belona

“The world now cries acid in the midst of the neon reflected in the drenched streets. Synthetic bodies clash with deadly tissues that still bleed. Existence has become a prelude to the agony of being confined to oneself, numbed only by the escape in the matrix. From the ends of the low cities, the mass remains subsistent feeding the insatiable viper of the fortunate and fills Belona with blood and fluids resulting from an endless dispute. . . power. For balance or chaos, the shadows rise stealthily, operating in their means and for their ends, with the hope of attaining the longed-for freedom. - Belona Fragments, LDC-76 Registry

If you like area control/contract fulfillment coupled with some high-stakes combat, you ought to give Belona a look. In this game, you’re controlling three teams within a faction against a rival faction, trying to dominate the most zones or eliminate the rival members. Members are represented by a d6, with the face value being how many members are in that group - and certain actions will cause you to lose members as you make progress toward your ultimate goals. Dominate zones, fulfill contracts, and bring a weapon with you in case things get out of hand and break out into a fight. This is sure to be a fast, exciting little game for two.

Morning Coffee Dungeon: Deep Sea Adventure

An underwater vessel has been discovered and you have been tasked with investigating. A stroke of bad luck has compromised your mission. Get what you can, treasures or creature samples, and escape before your air runs out!

An extremely simple, fast-playing game where everything you do is deterministic - the randomness comes from the treasure you can find. Every action you take costs a health, so the clock is ticking. You know the outcome of combat before it begins, and can decide where to go and what to do as you try and maximize your points before leaving the dungeon. Stay too long and you lose it all. A game that is playable while drinking your morning coffee, this is the first in a (hopefully) series of games that I’m excited to explore.

      Coats & Hats

These coats and hats are terribly disorganized. Group them by colour to win!

Elegantly simple in operation, this is a game you and one other person can grab and start playing almost immediately. Lay down garments on the table to the left or the right of the existing stack and then either activate an action or flip the card you played. Get 3 of the same color in a row to score a point. When does it end? Whenever you feel like it, you see who has the most points and that person is the winner. A single “round” will likely only take a couple of minutes, and at just 9 cards this is an easy one to craft and get to the table. Maybe after a few games of this I might be better at coordinating my own clothes. But maybe that’s asking too much of the game...

Game of the Week: Food Chain Island - ONLY $1!

On this forgotten island in a tiny corner of the ocean the animals are hungry! Your goal is to influence the wildlife - and arrange their meals - so there is only one animal left!

If you like a clever puzzle for your solitaire experience, this game is bound to delight with its gameplay (as much as its artwork!). Can you get the ultimate victory with only one animal remaining of the 16? Each animal can eat the animals up to 3 numbers below its value (all listed on the card), meaning with every move you make to eat an animal, you reduce your options as well as create open space on the grid. This one feels like the sort of game you’d play - and fail at - a dozen times in one sitting as you try to figure out how to move the animals optimally - each play will be different, and every animal has special powers that trigger as they devour.
