New games for Jan 1, 2021 - Bury Me In The Living Dungeon

Jason Tagmire

It's New Game Friday (and a new year too)! David Wiley (Cardboard Clash) is here to tell us about the new games.

Here’s what is new this week:

    • Bury Me In The Rift
    • Dice Of The Living Dead (2nd Edition)
    • Four Against Darkness: Silent Mill Dungeon Deck

This week's new games are all available at https://www.pnparcade.com/collections/new-games

Dice of the Living Dead (Second Edition)

Zombies have overrun your hometown. You’ve grouped up with other survivors, and you now have to make your way to the outskirts of town and escape the undead menace. On your way you have to fight zombies, search for survivors, and dole out your limited supplies. Every turn you roll dice trying to find the right balance between moving fast, but still having the time to fend off zombies. But just as every roll of the dice can help you, it also holds certain risks.

A game that will feel familiar in operation, you’ll be leading a group of survivors to try and move through four different areas. With each turn you’ll be rolling dice, one of which is the zombie die and rolled only once, and most of them being survivor dice that will give you actions for the turn but any 1’s get locked in as extra zombies. Standard fare in dice games like this, you can reroll most of the dice up to 2 times, locking some in as you go along. If you like fun, fast press-your-luck dice games and swarms of the undead then this will be a solo game you won’t want to miss.

    Silent Mill

Strange bell toll noises come from the once silent, automated mill built by Pavlov the gnome. Grinding has stopped. Find a way to the Dusty Cellars and Repair the Mill to get 100 gp payment from locals. Dungeon has TWO floors, Mill and Cellars. You start in the Mill and can go to Cellars through a hatch. There are two bosses - Gorehook and Squirmella. You find Grondsky if you slay both bosses.

I love the idea of the cards for Four Against Darkness. This is a completely self-contained adventure for levels 2-4, and everything is all on these cards. Obviously the base game book is needed, but I believe that would be the only thing. The card contains map room designs, search results, specials, traps, combat, treasure, and magic t all listed on each card - so with every new option you flip a new card. Also included, along with two boss encounters, are two special items to gain including a really cool warhammer. If I was a frequent player of 4AD, this would be must-have territory.

    Bury Me in the Rift

Invasion! Your squad of 2 mechs must protect the cities from giant monsters, while completing goals to earn upgrades across a 6-game campaign.

Survival games like this are a unique flavor of fun. This one has a lot of risk involved, as the session is a 6-game campaign and losing even once costs you the entire campaign. There are two maps you need to protect each game, warding off some monsters (and might I add the art in this game looks amazing). Need something more? Objective cards are attached to each map, giving you something to try and accomplish to earn additional rewards which can include upgrades to your mechs and pilots. Another cool wrinkle here is that monsters move and target to start the round, but don’t execute their attacks until after the player takes their turn. So use that to your advantage to take them down. This game looks and sounds awesome, and might be the first game I craft in 2021.

Game of the Week: Arcane Bakery Clash

It’s been a long time coming. You and a particular co-worker at the Arcane Bakery simply cannot work together anymore. In a moment of frustration, you challenge them to a duel: After close, no holds barred. The loser resigns. And cleans up the mess.

A 2-player dueling game with 18 cards and a cute theme, this one has all the sharp edges one would expect to find in the kitchen. Turn up the heat on your opponent by baking treats to reduce their health, or cool things down by healing yourself. There are special actions that can also come into play, based on what you make. With a simple set of options, and 2 actions to do per turn, this is going to be a fast and furious bake-off that you can finish in less time than it takes to watch an episode of Cake Boss.
