It's New Game Friday! David Wiley (Cardboard Clash) is here to tell us about the new games.

Here’s what is new this week:

  • What Lies Beneath
  • Goblins vs Zombies
  • Vault

What Lies Beneath

Work your way out of the crypt walls into safety. Along your journey, you will encounter demonic creatures who are on the hunt for your soul.

It is amazing what designers can do in such a limited design space these days. With only a few cards, you have a solo experience that provides two chapters of gameplay, two different character choices, and plenty of dice-rolling and ability-using fun to complete the adventure. Your health is your only real timer, with unlimited attempts to clear an encounter otherwise. If you enjoy fast solo games with a small number of printed components, don’t miss out on this game.

Goblins vs Zombies

Prepare the Goblins! The Zombies have arrived! Fighter Zombie, Thief Zombie, Wizard Zombie, oh my…

With five modes to play, including solo, cooperative, competitive, and a 2-player head-to-head match, there’s a ton of variety baked into this game. The basic premise is that there are waves of Zombies coming, and you need to keep a steady supply of Goblins to defend the town. If a Zombie breaks through, you lose. There’s special powers running abundant here, with plenty of room for clever cardplay which also adds to the staying power of this game.

Welcome to the world’s most difficult vault; a vault that can only be unlocked with dice. In this solitaire game, you play as a thief trying to crack the vault. With 12 locks, one of which will close every round, the pressure is high for you to steal as many gemstones as you can.

Put your roll-and-write skills to the test as you attempt to roll and cross off numbers fast enough to mark off a row or column before you run out of time. The clever thing here is that there are locks on the board, and each round one of them will close for good - if you didn’t get those gems, you won’t score them this game. You need to plan ahead for upcoming turns as well as try to figure out if you can snag a gem at the last minute, as you’ll be adding and/or subtracting die values to help you hit the numbers required on these squares. If you like making some tough decisions along the way, this is sure to have moments where the best way to use those dice isn’t always obvious!

Game of the Week: Deck 52: Space Wrecked on sale for just $7!

A spaceship wrecked (darn pirates!) and the only location your escape pod can reach is a huge derelict hulk. Try to survive and find your way to a rescue shuttle.

A clever little game, where you can play either one floor, or make it a campaign to reach floor 52 - with each successful clearing moving you up 1-7 floors while failure moves you down one. Cards are multiuse and help form your map as you explore, trigger events, and more along the way. Survive to find success, but if you fail you’re going to run out of air rather quickly while stranded in the big black of space. A solo exploration adventure that is sure to keep you playing time and time again, and can even be played using a standard deck of playing cards.
