It's New Game Friday David Wiley (Cardboard Clash) is here to tell us about the new games.

Here’s what is new this week:
  • Maze of Heroes

  • Ancient Realm: Leaders Expansion
  • Dangerous Space: Dekkar, Commandeer Mission

Maze of Heroes

The pantheon of champions has two vacancies! Grab your guns and enter the labyrinth…

A simple game of moving around the maze-like map, trying to shoot your competition before they shoot you. What sounds simple in concept is likely to feel a little more challenging when facing against an opponent trying to do the same thing as you: set yourself up for a shot without putting your own person at risk. With unique abilities for the characters that let you break the rules, such as diagonal shooting or jumping over walls, this quick and simple game will be quick to hit the table, and easy to set up for one more match.

Ancient Realm: Leaders Expansion

The course of history can be steered by powerful leaders. Achieve their goals alongside other major milestones to make the most of their singular talents.

Normally I love expansions that add nothing but more of what you already love about a game, and in a sense this fits the bill. However, this expansion takes a fun and rewarding game and makes it more challenging in the form of leaders and milestones. The Leader side of the cards give you criteria to meet in order to win the game, while the milestone side triggers when a certain condition is met mid-game and adds a new challenge to work through. This is a great expansion, one that I would almost always want to use as I rarely shy away from a challenge in a solo game.

Dangerous Space: Dekkar, Commandeer Mission

Dekkar was trained by a secretive sect of martial warriors whose code devotes each to a life of daring missions and quests.

Dekkar is a clever character who rewards clever gameplay, and you’re going to need it this week to Commandeer the Galactic Beam ship. You’re gunning to use the same numbers to mark two spaces next to each lever, but also to have those match the ship interface spaces in the Crew Quarters. The Plotting Bot is likely going to get in your way, as you cannot attack them unless you’ve collected the checkpoint in their room. Even worse are the Clever Hunters, who damage you if you mark a space diagonal to them, and can force you to ignore your defense gear when they attack. Bring your best this week, as you’re probably going to need it.

Game of the Week: Impossible Identity on sale for just $4!

You are a secret agent, infiltrating places and fighting to make things right.

This little RPG has plenty of space to explore to your heart’s content across story threads, vying to complete your objective within certain parameters that you can either choose, or use a d6 to roll on. Select one of six agent archetypes, figure out what you need to do, add in a bit of a twist to mix things up, and you are off to be able to play out scenes either alone or with some friends - no need for a Gamemaster as you set the conditions for your progress moving forward. If you are waiting for the next spy thriller to hit the big screen, this little ruleset might help to scratch a similar itch!
