GRIMLORE Profane Truths: Case File #43 - Henry Ainsworth, Mythos Investigator

Ireland, October 1925, Meath/Cavan line. A splinter sect - The Ember Lodge - plans to corrupt Samhain gateways so they open inward year-round. Henry Ainsworth is tasked to reinforce the thinnest places before the hillfire peaks. Each site - crossroads, bog cairn, stone ring - has a different flaw and a different seal. If he secures all three, the final breach at Tlachtga must wrestle with a whole veil; if he fails, the boss draws strength from every unsealed rift. Lantern, iron, salt. Hurry.

This week we have some emphasis on time, and you’re going to feel a bit of that as you scramble through to try and place letters on the various Seal Tiles on the map. These seals allow you to attempt to pass the test only once, and if you challenge the Heirophant too soon, it is going to possibly deplete your Mythos skill which is what you need to place those seals. The more failed seals you have, the harder this baddie hits you, too, which adds even more incentive to try and complete them quickly but, just as importantly, when the odds are in your favor.

Battle Pages: Kingdom of Scar Lake, Marching Order 4

An ancient rock from the sky created the pool that now holds enchanted blessings.

We’re about to bid goodbye to Mordecai, but before he goes we should look at the units he can recruit onto his side of the defense. Archers appear often, and are great because they can hit flying units. The Barbarian is a returning unit, too, which not only targets any adjacent enemy, but also can boost damage through spending charges. The Encampment is a nice structure, boosting the damage dealt by adjacent units. The Merfolk are able to target any adjacent or immediately diagonal enemy, and gets +1 charge when in water. However, the Crusader might be the coolest one, getting +1 additional charge when you bring them onto the map.

Power Creep: Antoine, The Docks, 2120

With word spreading of an apparent Creep vulnerability, a new surge of hope is spreading!

Antoine returns and this week he’s dealing with some Massive Worms that have overrun places like the Bookstore and the Movie Theater. I don’t know about you, but when I think of Massive Worms I end up thinking of Dune… anyway, these threats allow you to sacrifice a Good Die in the Threat Phase to reduce an Evil Die by 1, which is awesome since it can prevent their trigger. However, those Leader units are super mean, reducing all Good Dice by 1 so that’s not fun…

Dangerous Space: Will Tensin, Repair Mission

Will, the more brash of the Tensin brothers, is happy to dive blind for the sheer surprise and chaos that ensues. Deathwish?

Will is back to patch up some damage within this Decommissioned Battleship. His movement is passable with his gear upgrade. His combat is a little better, meaning those holes should hurt a little less than the leaks along the ship. Thankfully, neither threat impacts those values as he makes his way through, although you will definitely need to take some of them out so they don’t take Will down before he can finish his mission.

Button Shy Game of the Week: Lands of Amazement: Restorations Expansion

The amusements of yesteryear can still entertain modern audiences…if you can get them working!

A little expansion for a great solo game is here! This adds extra cards into the game, which is as easy as shuffling it on into the game and playing like normal. There’s cards with a wrench icon, and the game prohibits you from completing a park in the Portfolio Phase if there is a wrench anywhere within the matched plan, which is going to add layers of decisions into the mix of the gameplay. If you’re already enjoying this solo game, you won’t want to miss this!

Button Shy Game of the Week: Lands of Amazement: Family Fun Expansion

Your vision for a megapark promises fun for all ages. Now you’ve got to deliver!

This little expansion doesn’t mix into the base game, but rather is adding a new card next to the Goal Card, and now your megapark must be built atop this Family Fun Card (not tucked under). Not only that, but you also need two family icons in the park at the end to win. If you like additional challenges added into your solo gaming, this is a must-have expansion.

Game of the Week: Lands of Amazement on sale for just $2!

Creating fun takes hard work! As an aspiring amusement park designer you’ll need to build your portfolio by designing smaller parks before you can take on a top-tier megapark.

This game is bound to be a nice, solo brainburner type of game. You’re building amusement parks over the course of four rounds, using polyomino shapes on your cards to match them to the objective for the round. All of these serve as a preface to the real end game of this solo gem: the Megapark phase. In this, you’re using all of the cards in your Reserve stack to try and recreate the Megapark shown on the goal card, trying to get it to also have the same number of icons shown from the earlier rounds. This doesn’t do the game justice, though. If you enjoy solo games that require some thinking and planning, you won’t want to miss out on Lands of Amazement.
